Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
