Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
