Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
