This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
