Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
